Is “IoT” Raleigh’s Silicon Valley?

Innovate Raleigh Summit 2019 - Raleigh, NC

Is Raleigh following a Silicon Valley path?

In the 1970s and 80s, Silicon Valley combined its region's research, talent, and resources to capitalize on the booming semiconductor industry, leading to some of the earliest successful tech companies and the regional transformation that made Silicon Valley the hub it is today.

Does that transformational tale map to what Raleigh is doing today with IoT? Raleigh is leveraging our region's resources to capitalize on the fourth industrial revolution, and combining a similar blend of research, talent, and resources to capitalize on new markets related to the internet of things. This session featured Dr. Sarah Glova in a discussion about how 1970’s and 80’s Silicon Valley parallels with today's Triangle ecosystem. Session focused on how our region is an early adopter and a clear future winner for IoT in the next five decades, and more importantly, lessons learned from Silicon Valley's growth that could protect Raleigh from negative effects like skyrocketing living costs and inequitable diversity in leadership.
